A New Day

Romans 13:12-13
The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.  Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

The precious gift of day has been given to us in our salvation.  The long night of our sin-filled past spins around toward morning.  The darkness of our former selves gives way to something new.  And as we awaken into the truth of God’s forgiveness and mercy, that dark night seems so far away.  A new day is a fresh start and a clean slate.  The old troubles of the previous day are erased in the interlude of night.

Jesus is our day and our light.  We no longer have to walk in the dark and seek satisfaction in the works of darkness.  We no longer have to be swallowed up by the perpetual blackness of a life centered on sin.  But we rise to a dawning.  We enter a new day where the light of our precious Lord Jesus shines continually upon us.  Like throwing off a blanket in the morning, let’s cast off our old sins, our old mind-sets, our old desires and attitudes, and our evil ways.  And we can turn our face to the glorious Son of God and be refreshed in the light and warmth He offers us.

We put on Christ as an armor to protect us and shield us from foes that would seek to destroy.  He shines through us so that no matter what darkness we may enter, His light is still with us so we need not stumble or fall.  We can shed the old heavy chains of sin, cast them aside, separate ourselves from that burden of guilt and replace it with the lightweight armor of Christ.  It is our protection without being burdensome, and it guards us against every kind of foe.

Daylight brings out honesty.  It draws out of us all good works and a righteous way of living in all that we say and do.  Light exposes and leaves no place for deeds of darkness.  Under Jesus’ watchful eye of light, let us seek to only do what is honest and righteous.  Under the full brightness of Christ’s holiness, let us not resort to the works of darkness and partake in sinful and worldly attitudes and behaviors that cast shadows into our hearts and our lives and the lives of those around us.  As born-again believers, our night is over.  So let us rejoice in this new day God has given to us and dwell continually in the light.
