Job 9:10-12
Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number.  Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceive him not.  Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou?

This is the nature of God.  He confounds us because He is so much above us, so much more than we can fully grasp.  We can’t possibly know everything He does because His works are without number.  His greatness cannot be fully known or understood, though we know that He is great and powerful.  We can’t see Him like we are used to seeing other things because He is even beyond our field of vision, unable to be studied and scrutinized with our eyes.  And He truly does as He pleases.  We have no place where we can question what He is doing.  His sovereignty is supreme.

So how do we relate to God, then?  Do these things make Him unknowable or unreachable?  The truth is, we can know Him because He has revealed Himself to us.  Job and his friends have this dialogue which contains their slightly different viewpoints on God and who He is as they try to understand Him and how He operates.  But the truth only comes when God speaks to them, and that is what we must base our viewpoint on, because only God is right and true.

So if we can know God, if we can interact with Him and draw near to Him, the question becomes whether we want to or not.  The amazing truth is that our great God, the Creator of all things, the Author of life, the ruler of the world and the King of all descends to our level.  This God past our finding out wants to come close to each of us.  Our wonder-working God wants to work in our lives and our hearts.  This great and holy Spirit of God whose presence surrounds all things wants to make Himself known to us more and more.  He wants us to jump into that infinite sea and discover all that we can about Him.

The truth is, there is more to God than we can ever know, but that just means we can discover more of Him for our whole lives until we finally go to be with Him in heaven.  And these truths of who God is can reveal much about who we are, because we have to view ourselves in relation to Him.  He is supreme over us, but that means we can rest under His protection.  He can do more than we can ever know, but that means He can meet what seems like an impossible need.  We can’t see Him, but we can know that He is always with us and those we love no matter how far apart we are.  He does as He pleases, but we can trust Him with everything.  So may these things we can know about God entice us to learn even more about Him.
