If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
Up until then, God had been a thundering voice, a consuming fire, a powerful force, a presence among them, but someone not as easily discernible. Now He wasn’t so untouchable, so unknowable. Yes, He is still holy and set apart. Yes, He is all-powerful and all-knowing. Yes, He is even more than we can see just from looking at Him here, but He is also, perhaps, different than we realized He could be. Here was a God who wanted to talk with us, who wanted to be near to us, who wanted to share our burdens, to teach us His truth, to fellowship with us, to go along for the journey. Here is a God who wanted that kind of relationship, that kind of role in our lives, and He came all the way here so that would be possible.
So now when we read that He is God acquainted with our grief, our toil, our weakness, we can see that in Jesus Christ as He suffered. When we read that He will never leave nor forsake us, we look to Jesus being born into our world and know how true that is. When we read about how much He loves His people and how tenderly He cares for His own, we see Jesus doing that so many times when He ministered and healed and reached out to the loneliest hearts. When we read that He is the author of life, we see Him not only give physical life to men, but eternal life, as well.
Jesus is God in a form that we can look upon, that we can touch and feel. Man was made in His image, but He came in ours so we could know Him better, understand a little more who God is and what He is about. And truly Emmanuel, God in the flesh, has demonstrated to us with perfect clarity what our lives are then to be about, what we are to do, and how we are to respond to Him. He is reaching out, going to extremes for us, so let’s simply reach back and accept this amazing gift.
What do we think of when we think of God? How do we imagine Him to be? All we have to do is look at Jesus to know what an amazing God we serve. Jesus was more than a picture, a form or a representation of God. He was fully God here among us, talking to us, helping us, dying for us. Let’s get to know Him a little better. Let’s seek Him with greater desire and enthusiasm. And may what we find change us in significant ways that allow us to serve Him and others better and with greater purpose than ever before.
