The Heart of Giving

Luke 14:13-14
But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

We may think that getting nothing in return is not much of a reward, but it all depends on what our perspective of a blessing is.  If we are only concerned with earthly blessings, we will miss the point completely.  If we are only concerned with material blessings, we will miss out on a lot of the ways we can be blessed without receiving any things at all.  And if our motive behind serving and giving to others is because we expect something for ourselves, we will only be left empty and lacking.  Because the truth is, there are rewards we won’t ever receive this side of heaven, and not all blessings are things that we can have and hold.

There is a spirit of selflessness evident in our Savior, and He wants to cultivate that same spirit within each of us.  The true selflessness that Jesus patterned for us expects nothing in return and desires nothing in return.  A true selfless love sacrifices for others, the most needy of others, and wants nothing more than to meet needs and bring joy and ease burdens.  This selflessness that Jesus has shown us gives everything for everyone and keeps nothing.  And He wants us to minister to those who depend on others, those who need help, doing all we can, knowing He will reward us in greater ways than they ever could.

Let those of us who have give and not keep, especially when someone else needs what we have more than we do.  Let us be willing to share the blessings God has given to us as He leads and as He commands.  Let us be generous in meeting the needs of those around us with the proper attitude, spirit, and motive.  Let’s seek to emulate the self-sacrificing spirit of our Lord, who truly gave all He had for us when we were in our most needy, weakened, and desperate state.

Kindness and compassion go a long way, while selfishness and stinginess will get us nowhere.  Let us have the proper perspective on blessings.  And may we be willing to give of ourselves and give what we have without expectation of getting anything in return.  If we only give to get, we will never be satisfied.  But if we give in a spirit of love and obedience to the Lord, we will be blessed, and our hearts will be full.
