John 12:10-11
But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.
Lazarus had an amazing experience. He was part of an important miracle done by Jesus, but imagine what he had to go through. He actually died, and his body had started to decay in the grave where he laid. Then Jesus came and raised him from the dead, called him back from Paradise to dwell once again in our sinful world. What a story he must have had to tell. He was a living testimony of Jesus’ miraculous power. Of course, his friends and family would rejoice that he was alive after being dead. And many people even came to believe in Jesus because of him.
But the chief priests weren’t very excited about Lazarus’ resurrection. They did not rejoice that a dead man lived again. They did not marvel at the power Jesus had over death, that He could do such a thing. They did not value Lazarus’ life, nor the life-giving power of Jesus. And what good did they think killing Lazarus would do when he’d already been brought back to life once before?
When we accept Jesus as our Savior, He gives us new life spiritually, just as He gave Lazarus new life physically. And the world around us may try to destroy our “new life” in Christ. God’s enemies not only oppose God, but also the fruit and result of His work. And Christians are hunted targets of Satan and his forces. He will try to steal our joy and peace. He will try to trap us and trip us up, make us stumble and fall into sin. He will attack our lives, our churches, our cities, our country, and our world, all in an attempt to destroy the life of Christ in us.
But we need not fear, and we need not be defeated by Satan. Jesus is the source of the life within us, and He reigns victorious over sin and death and Satan himself. Though Lazarus faced physical death again, like all believers in Christ, he lives spiritually forever. And though the enemies of God would like to see us destroyed for our testimony before the world of Jesus’ transforming power, they cannot destroy the life that we have through Jesus Christ. As Christians, we have all been called forth by Jesus from death unto life. Let’s not waste the chance to live for His glory and lead many to believe on Him.
