A Journey into Truth

John 16:13
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Are we prepared to take this journey into truth? Will we surrender to the Holy Spirit and ask Him to be our guide through the Scriptures? And are we willing to cast out anything He reveals to be untrue about what we believe or what we accept? We can be sure that if we are willing to submit to His teaching and follow His instruction that He will show us many glorious things, for He can reveal the Father and the Son to us in new ways. And we can go forward with confidence, knowing that He will not lead us astray.

We also have to understand that when we choose the Spirit of truth as our guide, we might not always like what He reveals to us. Sometimes He will show us ugly things about ourselves that are not measuring up to God’s standard that He expects of us. Sometimes He shows us our unbelief in a painful way that is ultimately for our own good. And sometimes what He reveals to us turns our world upside down when we see how far we’ve gone astray from the truth of God. And when He reaches down into our core and shows us the truth of what is in our hearts, we might not like what He finds.

But if we are willing to take those painful steps, we can be sure there will also be many sweet ones along the way, because how it delights our hearts to learn more about God and who He is, His nature and His ways and means. We can learn great truths about how God works and the promises He’s made and how He can touch our lives as we look to Him. We can combat the lies of the devil with the pure, untainted truth of God and gain victory in our lives. And as we understand more about our Lord, we will serve Him, honor Him and love Him better.

The truth isn’t always what we want to hear, but it is necessary to dwell in truth if we would have close fellowship with our Lord. If we want a relationship with Him at all, we must first recognize the fact that we are sinners separated from Him, and then we must see the truth that Jesus is the way to be forgiven. And when we can accept those truths, His Spirit gently leads us on to the next one and the next one. So let’s take this incredible journey into truth with God’s Spirit guiding us each step of the way.
