An Eternal Foundation

Psalm 102:25-27
Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.

How silly it seems sometimes to cling to the things we cling to. We hold fast to our possessions and our positions. Museums preserve artifacts and history. We try to keep some things the same in our fast-changing world by holding to traditions and habits. But the truth is that few things will endure the ultimate test of time. When all is said and done, in fact, even the heavens and the Earth shall perish, but God will endure.

Though our world will crumble and decay, change form, shape and size, God remains. The architect of creation, the author of life surely cannot ever cease to be and cannot cease to be the same as He ever was and always will be. If we want something to cling to, something to hold on to in our lives, let’s cling to an eternal God who will never go away. If we want to find meaning and purpose and something that actually matters, let’s turn to the work of God, which carries an eternal significance.

Some people fear change, finding comfort in what is familiar. And change can be scary. It can involve a big adjustment as we try to figure everything out. Some people will cling to the dependability of what they’ve always known, even if it’s not a good thing, just because it’s the same and they know what to expect and how to deal with it. But few things in life are so certain, and few things can last a lifetime without changing in some way. In fact, things can change as fast and as often as we change our clothes.

So in the midst of an unsettling world of constant change, let’s depend more and more on our God who never changes. His mercy of old is still His mercy today. His love of old still surrounds and sustains us today. His blessings of old still rain down on our lives today. And we know that they will continue for all eternity. Even if our world would crumble around us, we can trust that God will never change. And that confidence we can have in Him, that dependability is a sure foundation to build on and to stand on. So throughout all the uncertainties of life, let’s cling to our Lord, for we can cling to Him forever.
