God’s Advantage

Job 1:9-11
Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.

Satan is relentless in his attacks and his accusations. He can condemn us and curse us and seek our destruction, but he doesn’t have unlimited power to use against us. His constant desire in our lives is to cause us to curse God, to think Him unfair or unrighteous or unkind. Because if he gets us questioning or doubting just one thing, it can destroy our relationship with God and lead us far from Him. Satan thinks that if he takes away something that is precious to us that we will stop seeking God and fall into darkness instead.

And in all the plots of the devil, as he tries to weasel his way into our hearts and separate us from our God, there are some things working against him in his efforts. Satan cannot understand the love of God nor the love that God’s people have for Him. He doesn’t understand the unconditional love that God offers to His people and the grateful hearts that reach back to their Father. And even though it may sometimes seem that our attempts to show love back to God are feeble or insignificant, our love for Him is as real as our love for anyone else that is dear to us. Job didn’t love God simply because He had blessed him so abundantly, and Satan couldn’t take away Job’s love for God by taking away those blessings.

God also knows the heart of Job, which Satan would never be able to know. And God knows each of us to our very core, and He cares for us in the most tender way. God’s wisdom is infinite, and He knows us in such a way that He knows what we can handle and where it will lead us. He knows who will be faithful and whose faith is shallow. He knows if we really do only love Him because of His blessings and if our true loyalty lies elsewhere. But above all, He knows what we are going through, what Satan’s attacks are doing to us, and He can use them for His own purposes.

Satan will use every trick in the book, but let’s refuse to believe his lies. And let’s not allow him to gain victory over us by cursing God in the midst of difficult circumstances. Instead, when trials come and life seems too hard and the pain is unbearable, let us allow that to bring us closer to our loving Father. Let us truly find rest and comfort in Him and learn more of Him through the dark times. Let us allow the love we share and the relationship we have with God to overcome anything Satan can throw at us.
