A Humble Attitude

Luke 14:10-11
But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.  For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

We have a choice when we enter the house whether we go down to the low rooms or up to the high ones.  It is an attitude that we cultivate over a lifetime whether we place ourselves above others or below them, whether we will serve others or expect to be served, whether we think of ourselves as superior to others or seek to lift up others instead.  If we think ourselves too worthy, God will show us to our proper place.  But if we humble ourselves first, God Himself will exalt us and raise us up to a station much higher than we deserve.

We may humble ourselves to the servants’ quarters, but God raises us up and calls us not slaves, but children.  We do not set ourselves up as rulers, but when we submit to serve, He prepares for us a home in heaven and gives to us a place at His table.  And when we humble ourselves enough to see our own lowly state, to recognize truly who we are and what we have within us, God saves us and calls us His redeemed.

But if we’ve already placed ourselves at the very top, there is nowhere that God can bring us.  We will be stuck there in a position of our own making we were never meant to have, and God will not be able to do anything for us.  We must be careful when choosing our own position that we don’t take one meant for someone else, but it is better to let God choose where He would have us to be.  So may we let go of these prideful attitudes that tell us we can dictate our terms to God instead of the other way around.

If we are humble before God, He can trust us, perhaps, with a positon of power or a role of authority.  Or it may be that our lives will be spent in some lowly service that goes completely unrecognized.  But when we are submitting to God, it won’t matter what He chooses for us, because we will be glad and honored just to serve our Master in some way.  It is simply a matter of choosing the lowest place and letting God tell us where to go from there.
