In the Furnace

Daniel 3:25
He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.

It’s not like the fiery furnace did not have the power to hurt or kill.  That had been demonstrated by the deaths of the men who threw the three Jewish men into the furnace.  It’s just that that fiery furnace had no power over these particular men because they were trusting in God.  What was deadly to others couldn’t hurt them at all.  They were safe in their Father’s care.  They were protected by Almighty God.  They were loose, they were alive, and they were not alone.

When we are trusting God, we have this same protection.  What might hurt others can’t hurt us.  The trial may be harsh, but we don’t face it alone.  It may be threatening and fearsome and dangerous, but as we’re trusting God, it has no power over us.  When He is working on our behalf, we’re invincible to those flames and the heat and the hurt that those things could cause us.

And not only do we enjoy this protection now, but when we trust Christ as our Savior, the flames of hell can never singe our hair or touch our skin.  The torments of death that others may face will not be upon us.  When it is Christ we are abiding in, we don’t have to face any punishment for our sins or worry about experiencing the wrath of God.  We are as safe in Him as these men were in the fiery furnace with Him.  And only Jesus can offer us that kind of safety and security.

Standing up for God and refusing to go the way of the world may lead us into severe circumstances, but He will honor our faith when we do that, and He will protect us in the midst of those things.  But even if His will is for us to die for His sake, He will carry us safely home to be with Him.  There’s no need to fear what men can do.  There’s no need to fear punishment or persecution or being hurt.  And there is no reason not to trust Him completely no matter what may happen to us.
