Giving Thanks

Psalm 69:30-31
I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving. This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs.

What can we get for the person who has everything?  What kind of gift can a poor soul bring to the rich man?  What can we offer to the one who gave His all for us?  It may seem a simple thing at first, maybe even an inconsequential thing, but we can bring a song of praise.  It is an expression of love to our Father, and don’t we appreciate those kinds of tokens from the ones we love?  And more than slaying a beast and offering it upon an altar, we bring the sacrifice of thanksgiving before the Lord.  We express to Him our gratitude.  We acknowledge Him for all that He is and all that He does for us.  We honor Him with the recognition He deserves.

Because of God’s greatness, and our lack thereof, He appreciates most these things we can give that He can’t get anywhere else.  Because our hearts are the most important part of us, He delights most in these things we can give that can only come from a heart of love.  And because He is worthy, He appreciates our efforts, and He accepts them, as imperfect as they may be, when we give them with a glad and grateful heart.

So let’s take time to praise our Lord.  Let’s sing those songs, those very personal songs that only we can sing, that express our love and thanks to Him.  Let’s lift high His name and exalt the God who made us and redeemed us, our provider and defender, our Lord and Master, our Father and our Savior.  Let’s tell Him what He means to us and how we feel about Him.  Let’s compose our song, written through pain and sorrow and joy and hope on the strings of our hearts, and offer it to Him with all that we can muster.

Truly the Lord is worthy.  Truly our God is great.  So let us not fail to bring forth these offerings to Him.  Let us never cease to praise and thank Him.  Let us pour out our hearts before Him, acknowledging all that He is and all that He’s done.  Let us not stay silent when we can magnify Him.  Let us not refrain when we can honor Him.  Let us not hold back when we can share something so precious with our gracious Lord.
