John 7:11-12
Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?  And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.

Has there ever been anyone more misunderstood than the Lord Jesus?  Everyone has an opinion about who He is, but not all care to know the truth.  Some are curious about Him but ultimately reject Him.  Some think He is a good man but scoff at the idea of Him being the Son of God.  Some would even count Him as evil, though He is righteousness and purity and goodness personified.  With so many different opinions, how was anyone to ever know the truth?

The key is to not place too much stock in what other people are saying, to not fall for the rumors or the false truths that people will try to spread.  We have to listen to what Jesus says and decide if He is true or not.  We have to look to His Word and determine whether we will believe it or not.  And if we go searching with an open heart, we will not find anything less than the truth in Christ.  When we are willing to take Jesus at His word, the picture becomes clearer, and the glimpses that we get of Him in Scripture only solidify that He was exactly who He said He was—the very Son of God.

Once we learn the truth of who Jesus is, what will that change about us?  To know that Jesus wasn’t a deceiver, to know that He was more than just a good man, more than just a prophet, more than a teacher or a wise man should give us great hope.  To discover that Christ had come, that a Savior had arrived, that God was near can pull us out of the old, out of the dark, out of the chains and into a glorious new life, into freedom and fellowship with Him.  But if we keep our minds closed to what Jesus is saying, then we have no part with Him.

The people who lived in Jesus’ day were trying to put the pieces together in the midst of everything unfolding around them, but we have the benefit of the complete Word of God to guide us into the truth about who Jesus is and who He isn’t.  So will we go honestly to the Scriptures to gain a better understanding of this man called Jesus?  Will we desire to only know what is true about Him and cast from our minds and our hearts any untruth that has managed to make its way in?  Let us seek Him with humble hearts and allow His Spirit to guide us into all truth.
