John 18:37-38
Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then?  Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king.  To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth.  Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.  Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.

Jesus came to tell the truth.  And what is that truth?  That man is sinful.  That the hearts of men are desperately wicked.  That man has fallen well short of God’s holiness no matter how righteous he counted himself to be.  That we’ve all messed up and we’ve gone astray and we’ve disobeyed.  We’ve failed.  And there is a price to pay for that.  And that’s not an easy thing to hear.  It’s not a pleasant thing to know.  But it is a necessary truth for us to understand in our lives.

But that wasn’t the only truth Jesus told, because He also revealed who He is.  He is the Son of God, the one sent from the Father, that Son of David Israel had been seeking.  He came to say, as God in the flesh, that He loves us and He wants to help us.  He wants to be our Savior and deliver us from the oppression of sin and the shackles of the flesh and the grips of Satan.  He came to tell us the truth that we can find forgiveness in Him.   We can find peace with Him and hope of a better future and rest in this weary world.  We can find life through Him, and all it takes is faith.  All it takes is believing that truth He’s told.

It was a truth not readily received by many in Jesus’ own day.  It was a truth almost universally rejected by His own nation.  But despite that, it is still a truth that we can accept in our own hearts and lives today.  We can depend on the things God tells us.  We can know these things for sure.  We can find freedom in this truth because it truly does set us free.  And to know Him and trust Him and believe Him changes the whole course of our lives.

Jesus came to tell us who we are and who He is and who we can be in Him.  He came so we could know for sure and know Him and know His truths.  He came to give us a different lens and a different filter for the lies and deception of the devil that have saturated our world since his first lie in the Garden.  As God in the flesh, Christ was also Truth in the flesh, and so we can believe Him and trust Him and depend on what He has given to us, what He’s said to us, and what He’s done for us.  So, how much does this truth matter to us?  Whose truth will we accept as absolute?  And what will we do with it in our own lives?
