Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
If we can move mountains with faith like a mustard seed, perhaps it’s not bigger faith that we need as much as more focused and specific faith. We’ve trusted God once for salvation, but now we need faith to cast out a devil or become a missionary or commit to a ministry or walk away from something, move toward something, step out of the same things we’ve always done. Because this time, it was going to take something more than the disciples had before. This was a special case, something harder, something different, and they had to summon the faith to deal with this one thing in a different way than they had faith for the things they had done before.
We can’t depend on our previous faith. We need to have faith anew for each new situation. We have to have faith that God can heal if we want healing. We have to have faith that God can provide if we have a need. We need to have faith that God can work in a heart if we need to overcome something that has beset us. We need to have faith that God overcomes sin if we need some specific victory. Our faith is always in God, but we need to believe He can work in specific ways if we want to see Him work in those things.
Where are we lacking in something we hoped to see accomplished? Is there something we tried to do and failed? Is there an area where we are lacking faith and so have yet to see God move in that situation? Jesus gives us the answer. Have we prayed about it? Have we fasted about it? Have we searched His Word for His promises to give us the faith we need to have what we seek? If what we’re asking seems so impossible, we simply have to have faith that with God all things are possible, that He is able, and that He will accomplish it.
Let us ask God to help us have faith in whatever our area of unbelief may be. When we thought we should have had victory and did not, let us seek the Lord and find out where we’re lacking in our faith. Let’s make sure of what His will is in that particular situation. And then let us have patience, waiting on the Lord with expectation. We can accomplish much with our little faith when it is Him we are trusting in.
