God Is on Our Side

2 Chronicles 32:7-8
Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him: With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles.  And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

God beats an arm of flesh every time.  No matter how powerful the enemy may seem or how great the multitude that would come up against us, we can be strong and take courage.  We need not fear or be dismayed.  It is only because we are too dependent on our vision, too focused on the visible, physical world around us that we do not see God’s mighty army surrounding us, armed for battle and able to destroy them with merely a word.  It is only going forward thinking we have to handle everything by our own power that causes us to fear and tremble every time our weakness is magnified by our enemy.

But we, too, can find rest in the words of Hezekiah because they can apply to our lives today, as well.  When we are God’s children, He is with us to fight our battles.  He has not abandoned us or cast us off, leaving us to fend for ourselves as the enemy draws near.  He has promised to be with us.  He has promised to help us.  He has promised to defend us.  And He never breaks those promises, so we can continue to trust in them.

Let’s take our eyes off the apparent bigness of the sin and evil and trouble that surrounds us and start focusing on our God, who is bigger than all of those things.  Let’s not fold under the apparent power of Satan and his forces that are at work all around, but rely on our Almighty God, who is greater and stronger than anything the devil can ever throw at us.  Just at those moments when our trials seem overwhelming and the multitude threatens to overtake us, let’s look up and remember that our God can do above and beyond anything we can imagine.

There is hope, there is help, there is strength at hand.  We just simply need to trust the One who is able.  There is no one else to turn to.  No arm of flesh could help us defeat the enemies we face.  And our God is near and willing to help us when we cry out to Him, rely on Him, and trust His leading and working.  Let’s refuse to allow situations that seem hopeless to defeat us before the battle has even begun when God is on our side.
