A Call to Give

Matthew 5:41-42
And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.  Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

We may have a generous spirit and a giving heart and seek out people to be a blessing to.  We may share what we have with others and gladly bring our tithes and offerings to the Lord each week.  But it’s different when someone comes to us for help than when we offer our help to others.  Maybe then we’re giving out of our excess, but now we might have to give from what we needed for ourselves.  Now they’re kind of imposing a little bit.  Maybe now it’s not convenient.  These kinds of situations test our willingness to give more so than when we offer our help before being asked.

But we must cultivate a generous and giving spirit.  God is a giver, and He doesn’t hold back.  His generosity gave us His Son.  And Jesus’ selfless giving meant He laid down His life.  And if we’re going to obey God in our lives, we must be willing to go above and beyond, to give even if it hurts us, and to respond to anyone with a heart of selflessness.  We must not think too much of ourselves and what we want.  We must not be unwilling to answer the call when God sends someone our way with a need we can meet.

This kind of giving is to be “no questions asked.”  And while we are supposed to be good stewards of what God has given to us and to be prudent and mindful of how we spend our time and other resources, sometimes God gives us something that we are meant to give away.  Sometimes an opportunity comes along that is a sort of test of our willingness to go and to give and to be generous and to be a blessing and to be used by God.  We are the tools in His hands, meant to be doing His work however He asks us to.

When someone comes to us with a need, let us be prepared to meet it as best we can.  Let us not turn others away empty, but share with them what God has blessed us with.  Let us not be stingy with our time or our possessions, but be willing to do something extra, give a little more, spend more time and deny no one who comes to us.  These are all opportunities to share the love of God with friends, neighbors, and strangers.  These are all chances to show lost people the kind of God we follow and to emulate His spirit of giving.  So let us allow ourselves to be blessings to those around us and to answer the call to give.
