Revelation 22:20
He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

John had the amazing privilege of being one of Jesus’ disciples.  He got to walk with Jesus during His ministry, hear His preaching, and witness all of those miracles up close and personally.  And then near the end of his life, he got to see all of these things that were revealed to him of heaven and the future and what is yet to come.  And after that experience, he had to go home and write about it.  He had to attempt to portray the glory that awaits us, what it’s like to see Jesus face-to-face.  And His conclusion after all that he saw and heard and experienced was, “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”

The entire biblical account ends with a plea for Jesus.  The Old Testament anticipated His coming from the time that Adam and Eve sinned in the garden and the curse came upon the Earth.  Within every cry for redemption and deliverance was a hope for that future Savior, the Messiah who would come.  And then the New Testament details His first coming, His work on the cross, His resurrection, the founding of the church and all that comes from that.  And as we live with the hope of Christ within our hearts, we still look forward to His coming.

The truth is that all this world needs is Jesus.  All we need is Jesus, and we anticipate His coming, because nothing here is as it should be and will not be until He makes all things right, and He promises to do just that.  Jesus will come into our hearts to save us.  He will come into our lives to lead us.  He will come into our sorrow to comfort, into our pain to heal, into our needs to fulfill.  He will come into our lives to live forever, and then He will come back to this world to set us free and take us home.

The final truth of God’s Word is that He will come.  We may grow weary with waiting.  We may wonder when it will be.  But the fact that He will come again is just as certain as the fact that He came the first time.  We may not have gotten to experience the things that John did, but our Bibles give us a glimpse of Jesus and what awaits us, what we can look forward to.  So may the words of Scripture and the Spirit of God and the love of Christ dwelling within our hearts pull our gaze upward as we look eagerly for that day.
