Psalm 119:17-24
GIMEL.
17 Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live, and keep thy word.
18 Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.
19 I am a stranger in the earth: hide not thy commandments from me.
20 My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times.
21 Thou hast rebuked the proud that are cursed, which do err from thy commandments.
22 Remove from me reproach and contempt; for I have kept thy testimonies.
23 Princes also did sit and speak against me: but thy servant did meditate in thy statutes.
24 Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counsellors.
An important attitude that must develop in us in regards to God’s Word is trust. Trusting His Word is first about trusting God and His sovereignty and authority and understanding that He is in control. We have to trust His grace and goodness toward us and understand that it is God who really enables us to obey in the first place. And a main way He does that is through His Word. Because He gives us the wisdom and understanding that we lack. We need Him to reveal His truth to us so we can continue to grow.
And when we have the right viewpoint about God, that helps us to have the right viewpoint on the things He says in His Word. It is His judgment. It is what God says is right, and He is truly the only one who can make that kind of determination. Our place is simply to submit to that and abide by what He says. He enables us to see truth in a world of lies. He helps us see the beauty of the things in His Word that inspire us and encourage us and change us from the inside out. And what we find in His Word to hide in our hearts can make a difference in how we see God, how we see ourselves, and how we see the world around us.
So when we are in that place of obedience, we’ll find ourselves in that place of blessing, as well. God will give us favor. He will bless us. And those things come from Him because He decides to give them. He is in control of that, too—the doling out of blessings upon us. Those outside forces never supersede God. Others may go against us, but God is on our side. We are under His authority and protection. So may we live with that important understanding and allow God’s Word to be that guiding force, that ultimate source of direction for every situation we may face.
