Psalm 119:113-120
SAMECH.
113 I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love.
114 Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.
115 Depart from me, ye evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God.
116 Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope.
117 Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually.
118 Thou hast trodden down all them that err from thy statutes: for their deceit is falsehood.
119 Thou puttest away all the wicked of the earth like dross: therefore I love thy testimonies.
120 My flesh trembleth for fear of thee; and I am afraid of thy judgments.
The Word of God is our protection from many things that come against us. It protects us from the wrong kind of thinking and guards our minds from things that have no substance, meaning, or value. It shields us from evil and helps to keep us from being wrongly influenced by others so we can do what God wants us to do. It gives us hope in a sinful world to know that we have the assurance of God’s continual presence and protection.
The Word of God also protects us from death by showing us the way to life. Jesus is the Word, and he is our source of eternal life, and we can have that sure hope in Him. And in Christ, we are safe from the wrath and judgment of God for our sins. And even during our time here, God protects us from ourselves by upholding us so that we do not fall into things we shouldn’t. Following His Word helps us to avoid sinful choices and protects us from the lies of the ungodly who have rejected His truth.
So as God’s Word is our source of protection in a wicked world, may we guard our relationship with it. We love God’s Word and give it a high priority. We hope in it as a trustworthy source. We keep it because it is worthy of our obedience. We respect it and honor what it says by surrendering to the full authority of it. We fear God’s Word, because we will ultimately answer to Him for all that we do. Our lives are truly in His hands. So may we be willing to find our rest under the shield His Word provides for us and trust fully in what God has given to us.
