Go and Tell

2 Kings 7:9
Then they said one to another, We do not well: this day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace: if we tarry till the morning light, some mischief will come upon us: now therefore come, that we may go and tell the king’s household.

What an amazing thing had happened for some lepers with no hope.  The city was besieged by the great Syrian army, and the people inside the walls were starving.  It was a bleak situation indeed.  But when these lepers go out to the camp of the Syrians, they find it abandoned and all their stuff right there for the taking.  There is plenty of food, plenty of treasure, more than enough just for them.  God had caused the Syrians to flee, and no one even knew they were gone until these lepers make this discovery.  And they knew it wasn’t right to keep this knowledge and spoil just to themselves.

Israel would have stayed hungry and dying without this knowledge of the spoil.  It was all there waiting for them, but someone had to tell them about it.  And when they did tell them, they had to then go and see for themselves and partake of it.  God doesn’t always make a big spectacle of what He does, even this great deliverance.  Sometimes He works in different ways that we wouldn’t even notice if we weren’t paying attention.  And so we shouldn’t hold our peace when we’ve found a great treasure that can benefit someone else, but let’s tell others what we’ve discovered so they can also receive a blessing.

Of course, the greatest news we have to tell is about Jesus and how He saves us from our sins, how He died for us, how He loves us so much.  That’s something we should proclaim ever more to the lost and dying world around us.  Those without Jesus are starved of hope and peace and life.  Those who don’t know about Jesus are dead in their sins.  Those who haven’t heard the good news are on their way to hell.  And so once we know that Bread of Life is there for us, once we know Jesus as our Savior and have received that precious gift of eternal life, let’s tell them about Jesus so they can know what is available to them if they would only receive it.

Our great enemy has been defeated, and so we can be free.  But if we never venture outside the city and see for ourselves, we’ll continue to live in that state of oppression and captivity.  But God has made a way.  He’s done the hard part of going out to battle on our behalf, and so we can experience the spoil of that battle.  We can go out and gather all these treasures that are left behind and experience the abundant life that God gives to us through His Son.  And so once all of our needs have been met in Him, let us be sure to let everyone around us know that He can do the same for them.
