John 13:13-15
Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
If Jesus was willing, why aren’t we? Jesus humbled Himself and was ever stooping lower to serve and minister. Though His name is highly exalted, He was willing to take on a servant’s task. Though our Lord is high and mighty, He would perform the most menial job. And so if nothing is beneath the King of kings and Lord of lords, it shouldn’t be beneath us, either. He never asks us to do anything He hasn’t done first Himself.
Jesus gives us a living example instead of just making commandments or telling us what to do. He demonstrates Himself what we are to do. He shows us by His actions what we are to be. The attributes of God come to life in a dynamic way through Jesus Christ as He gives and serves and loves mankind up close and personally. How much more of an impact it has on us when the word comes to life, and Jesus is a walking, living, breathing example that we can follow. So may we always follow Him faithfully.
Just because Jesus was willing to humble Himself does not make Him any less Master and Lord. Just because He submitted to the Father does not tarnish His glory in any way. But we are to follow His example of submission. We are to forsake our will for His. We are to want good for others and not just ourselves. We are to become like our Great Example and then become examples to those around us, imitators of the one we serve so others will desire to know Him and serve Him, too.
Are we willing to rise up from the table and bend down at someone else’s feet to serve them? Are we willing to do anything Jesus asks of us no matter how low we would rate it on our list of preferred things to do? Have we humbled ourselves to that place of service? Let’s remember often all the many things that Jesus has done for us, how He has served us through His faithfulness and love. When we see Him there willing to serve, it should produce in us a strong desire to give back all we can to the one who gave so much for us. So let us take His example to heart and truly be like Christ.
