Help on the Journey

Acts 8:29-31
Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.  And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?  And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me?  And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

Here was a man seeking God as best he knew how.  He went to Jerusalem to worship.  He was spending time in Scripture.  But he doesn’t understand fully what it all means and how Jesus factors in.  And as he’s puzzling over all his questions, God sends Philip to him so that he can come to that place of belief in Christ and receive salvation.  He was never going to understand it on his own, and God gave him exactly what he needed to assure he would gain the wisdom that would enable him to be saved.

Sometimes we’re like that Ethiopian man, seeking but uncertain, desiring to know God, or to know more about Him or some truth, and simply needing some guidance.  We’re at a place where we just can’t figure it out on our own.  And so often God will send someone along at just the right time to assist us on our faith journey.  And then perhaps this man went home and shared his experiences and what he had learned with others, and then he is able to lead others to Christ and help them find God and understand what it is all about.

So then sometimes we’re also the Philip and God sends us somewhere to be a help to someone else and a witness for Him.  Sometimes He calls us to just go alongside someone else and aid them in their journey of seeking Him.  Sometimes He uses us to share what we’ve been able to learn and keep passing on that wisdom so that the cycle continues and keeps repeating over and over again.  And perhaps the most important quality that made Philip so usable was simply his willingness to obey and go wherever God would send him.

Let’s not forget that we’re all in this together.  We can all learn more about what it means to follow Jesus, so let us be willing students with open hearts to learn new lessons.  And as we grow, we’ll be able to pass those things on to others and be a blessing to them.  So may we be willing to be used in that way as God leads.  And may we be grateful for those who come alongside us and help us to understand and grow along the way.
