The Profit of Scripture

2 Timothy 3:16-17
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

There is only one sure source if we want to know how to live a godly life.  It comes from God Himself, and how amazing it is that we can have and know His words to us.  He is not silent and distant, but constantly speaking and constantly with us in the form of the Scripture He has breathed out for us.  All of Scripture is given by Him, so we should study it all, read it all, and seek to know everything that God would have us to know.

The Scripture God gives to us is profitable.  We benefit from it.  We gain something out of it.  But we have to take time for it in order learn and grow.  It is given to us for doctrine—right teaching of the things that are necessary in order for us to know God, believe Him, and follow Him.  It contains, with a fullness and completeness, all we need to please God with our lives.  This powerful and living Word can mold and make us into servants who love and serve God faithfully and are examples to others.

It’s given for reproof.  It shows us what is wrong in us, what goes against God’s way.  It clearly defines sin and shows us when what we do doesn’t align with righteouness.  But then it doesn’t leave us there in a place of blame.  It exposes our faults so we can change, so we can correct our path to go the right way, so we can stop doing what is wrong and do what will please our holy God.

It is also for instruction.  It is our constant teacher and guide.  We can be ever learning and ever growing, conforming our lives more and more to God’s accepted ways so we can live those godly lives that please Him.  There are so many sources of lies, so many things that compete for our attention, for our minds, for our hearts.  But may we fill them with Scripture, given to us by God so we can know truth and abide by it.  The Word of God is what makes us into what we are supposed to be.  Its vital truths can shape our lives, so may His holy wisdom guide our paths today.
