2 Kings 6:5-7
But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowed.  And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim.  Therefore said he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it.

Elisha performed a miracle for an axe.  It wasn’t a life-or-death situation.  This wasn’t a king going out to defend his kingdom or a warrior in battle.  This wasn’t a case of famine or sickness.  No one’s life was at stake.  This was a simple servant, a man doing his work, who had lost the head of a borrowed axe.  And it may seem like such a small thing.  But didn’t it matter to this man who had lost it?  And didn’t it therefore, then, also matter to God?  It did, and so much so that He enabled Elisha to draw the iron axe from the pool of water so that it could be restored.

There is nothing too big for God, but there is nothing too small for Him, either, because He cares about every little thing in our lives.  And so these smaller, maybe less important concerns of ours matter to Him as much as the bigger, more important ones.  He can intervene in them, and He is willing to intervene in them.  God loves us so much, and He is gracious and merciful, and don’t these kinds of instances just prove that to us over and over?  Those little moments of “wow” show us God is with us, He is near, and He will help us.

So then may we never think that anything is too small to bring before the Lord, that something seemingly insignificant isn’t worth bringing before our loving God.  Parents who love their children don’t only help them with major decisions and problems in their lives, but they help them in every struggle they face, and God does the same.  He wants to be involved in every part of our lives, and He wants us to seek Him for every need.  And He gets just as much glory from working in those small things as He does in those bigger things.

Anytime despair hits our lives, no matter what form it takes, we can cry out to God for help.  He will intercede in those things that may seem minor to others but matter very much to us.  He can do those impossible things, whether it’s defeating an army or pulling an axe from the bottom of a lake.  So let’s trust our great God.  Let’s depend on Him as the good Father that He is and allow Him to work in our lives.  Let’s invite Him into every part of our lives and look to Him alone no matter how big or how small the need may be.
