Following By Faith

Hebrews 11:8
By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

A proper response to a call from God is obedience.  Most likely He won’t give us all the details.  We probably won’t know what is ahead, exactly what we’ll face, what we may have to experience.  But let’s go anyway.  Let’s pack up everything and go where we’re called to go.  Let’s move forward no matter what His request to us was.  Because that is faith—in God, not ourselves, not our knowledge, and not our circumstances.

Our faith in God should enable us to go forward in obedience.  But we have to trust the one who is telling us to go.  We have to know He is going with us wherever He leads us.  We have to know He’ll prepare us for whatever we have to face.  We have to know He’ll give us what we lack.  We have to know He’s working in the situation all along.  We have to trust His wisdom and His strength and His perfect plan.  We have to trust His knowledge of the future and understand He wants good things for us when we’re willing to obey.

Abraham probably never would have gone so far from home if God hadn’t called him to.  He was successful where he was.  He had a family and possessions and a home.  But he was willing to uproot his whole life to obey God.  He was willing to receive a promise that wouldn’t even be completely fulfilled in his lifetime.  He knew that with God, there is always more than meets the eye.  There is always something much grander and greater beyond awaiting us if we’ll just take that first step, if we’ll just bow in submission and do anything He asks of us.

What kind of steps of faith can we make in our lives right now?  What is God calling us to that we may have been hesitant to obey Him in?  Have we been too fearful to abandon everything we’ve ever known and submit fully to God’s call on our lives?  Faith isn’t about doing reckless and unreasonable things or thinking we have to make some huge sacrifice to demonstrate our faith.  It’s simply being open to God, knowing His will, and obeying Him in it.  So let’s go forward by faith into whatever God has called us to.
