A God Who Knows Us

Psalm 139:2-3
Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.  Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.

What would change about our attitude toward God if we started seeing Him less as some distant being high above the heavens and beyond our reach and more as a personal God whose presence surrounds us all the time?  The reason He can be everything to everyone is because He is always everywhere.  The reason His promise to not leave us nor forsake us is always fulfilled is because He can be with everyone at the same time.  It’s easy to think of Him as so far off, just too big to ever come close, but all along He is near, even before we ever know Him.

The amazing thing is that God walks with each of us as if we were the only one He had to pay attention to.  He gives us all that much focus in our lives.  He is aware of every detail about us because He made us, and He made us who we are on purpose.  He always knows where we are because He is always right there with us.  He knows our thoughts because there is no part of His creation that is off-limits to Him.  He is not limited by anything, and so He can know everything, even what is yet to come.

Wasn’t His purpose in creating us to fellowship with us?  Didn’t He always desire to draw near to His people?  So why wouldn’t he be not only interested, but also involved, in every detail of our lives?  Isn’t it true that He has such a powerful, infinite love for all of us?  Then why wouldn’t He look into our lives and desire to share every aspect of them with us?  Don’t we desire that same kind of closeness and intimacy with the ones we love?

What a comfort to know that our Father knows everything about us and our lives.  He knows where we’ve been, where we are, and where we have yet to go.  He knows our deepest struggles and our greatest joys.  He knows all those intricate details that make us who we are, and surely He delights in each unique person He has made.  Let us draw ever nearer to this God of ours who knows us so well and seek to know all we can of Him.  Let’s share our lives with Him, opening our hearts to His love and our ears to His voice.  He is not just an observer on the sidelines, but an active participant in the lives He has given to us.
