He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down. Thou makest darkness, and it is night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth.
An Earth that didn’t rotate through the days and through the seasons would be an unhealthy Earth. Constant exposure to sunlight would scorch and burn. Neverending darkness would produce a barren, almost lifeless place. A constant winter would mean no new life could spring forth, while a constant summer would give no rest. God, in His infinite wisdom, created a world that is always moving. To be still would throw it into disorder.
It works the same way in our lives. They are in constant motion, even if we are standing still. God is engineering circumstances all around. He is working and moving among us. Events are occurring or are soon to occur. There are choices to be made and steps to take. And then there are things that happen to us that we couldn’t have caused or prevented. But no matter what else is going on, it can’t be day all the time, but nor is it night all the time. Each has their season and their turn, and we can count on going from one to the next.
Our seasons can be as short as a day or as long as a winter, but God has a purpose for each. The dormancy of winter breaks out into the fruitfulness of spring. Hard things we face now prepare us for harder things ahead. A time for rest comes when we’ve reached our limit. The dawn of a new day brings fresh hope. The continual renewing of the Earth reminds us that God will continually renew us, too. And the seasons show us that what we are enduring now won’t last forever.
There is a beautiful balance in the Earth that God has created, and He gives us balance in our lives, as well. Though we may not understand all the systems and process that make our Earth work, we can appreciate the results that we can observe. And within our lives, we don’t always understand what God is doing or why certain things happen, but we can be assured that He knows what He is doing, He has a purpose and a plan, and it will work out exactly as He wants it to. There is evidence of Him working all around us, so may that encourage us in whatever season we find ourselves in.
