Psalm 144:3-4
LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!  Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.

In other words, we’re pretty much nothing.  A 100-year life span in the grand scheme of eternity doesn’t really amount to much.  A single person out of the billions that have existed seems pretty insignificant.  And to think of mankind, so sinful and rebellious at heart, how could we really have any value to a holy God?  And when we think of God so big, so far outside time and space and so beyond our understanding, it may be hard to imagine Him caring about us at all.

But the truth is, we matter very much to God.  The truth is that even though there are so many other people and our lives don’t last that long and we’re just these creatures so weak and prone to failure, we have value to our Creator.  The truth is that God thinks about us very much.  He peers into our lives and seeks to be actively involved in them.  He looks upon everything He has created and takes account of it and is concerned for it.  Jesus talked about God noticing even the sparrows, and so all life is valuable to Him, and ours particularly so.  Out of everything He created, His main focus is mankind.

It’s easy to think of ourselves as so small and lowly that we couldn’t possibly matter.  But maybe we just need a different perspective.  We’re not mass-produced products coming off an assembly line in a factory, but we are handcrafted individually by God Himself.  He made every single one of us, and if He did so, surely He is invested in every life that He originated.  Surely He cares about us and what we’re going through.  Surely He wants to guide us along so that we fulfill everything He has planned for us.  And surely, then, He will continue to work in and through us for the duration of our lives.

The truth is, though, our time here is short.  So can’t we pack all the life that we can into the lives we’ve been blessed with?  Shouldn’t that motivate us to be diligent in doing the things we should do and forsaking those things we shouldn’t do?  Shouldn’t the shortness of our time here inspire us to make a difference for our Lord’s cause while we can in whatever way He wants us to?  We may just be one out of billions, but that just means we’re one of a kind, uniquely special to our God and here for a time to be used by Him in a uniquely special way.
