And after three days and an half the spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them. And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.
So often it may seem as if good is defeated, as if righteousness can be overthrown. It can seem, to our limited human vision, that evil is gaining ground and that God is losing the battle. All we have to do is look at the world around us and see the rise of evil and the intensity of its fervor for death and destruction. We see the great spread of evil and how its darkness threatens to overwhelm any light that attempts to shine through. And on a future day, God’s two witnesses will stand for Him until they are killed by the evil men who inhabit the world.
But God is always life, and life is always better than death. Life is always more powerful, and it ultimately triumphs. When the Spirit of God enters in, life is given where death had once reigned. As God’s Spirit descended on the world, life was given in dead places. As His Spirit comes into our hearts, new life is given where only certain death had once dwelt. And that great life-giving power that comes from God is yet at work among us and is available to all who will accept it from Him.
What a sight it will be when those decaying bodies rise again and all those who opposed them stand as witnesses of God’s true power. Many years before this moment, Satan watched Jesus be nailed to a cross and buried in a tomb, and then he watched as Christ rose again in triumph. Down through the ages, the evil ones have watched men trust in Jesus and gain the victory as new life is imparted to them. And someday, maybe soon, a whole world will see the dead in Christ rise up and those of His own left alive go to meet Him in the air.
Let’s not be discouraged when it seems like Satan is winning, because we know that in the end, God will give life to His own and Satan will be defeated forever. The power of life that comes from God is stronger than anything the evil ones can throw at it. Their attempts to defeat God and His people will be short-lived. Their seeming victory will be turned into certain defeat when they are cast away once and for all. So let us be encouraged to keep going and serving, to keep seeking and growing, to endure whatever hardships we may face in a life lived for God.
