John 14:27-29
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.  And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.

How do we have the peace that Jesus offers to us?  By believing His truth and trusting His Word.  For the disciples, challenges were on the horizon.  Trouble was coming.  Fearful moments would soon be upon them.  Jesus was trying to prepare them for what was soon to come.  He had told them about His impending death.  He washed their feet and gave them a commandment to love one another.  He told them that He was going to prepare a place for them and promised to send His Spirit to dwell within them.

But Jesus’ death was an event that would turn their world as they knew it upside down.  And because of that, they were thrown into a whirlwind of sorrow and fear due to their unbelief.  But peace would come if they believed His words, if they trusted Him.  Because His Word is peace, like it was when He spoke to the winds in the boat and the storm ceased.  It calms our fears and centers us on the reality of His goodness, His presence, His power, and His protection.

We don’t have to face anything alone, because Jesus goes with us.  We don’t have to succumb to fear and worry, if we would just believe Him.  We can have peace because it is given to us by Christ, who is God, who never fails, who is faithful and true.  So let’s not live in that state of trouble, but live believing in Christ.  When we do so, His peace will fill our hearts even when trouble comes and we face an uncertain future.

Jesus was going to go away.  It was a necessary part of God’s plan.  But He left His peace for His disciples, and they were certainly going to need it.  Though they doubted and misunderstood in those early moments of His resurrection, they surely came to understand what true peace was when they experienced it for themselves.  We, too, can have this peace.  We don’t have to be consumed by worry and fear, but we can allow Jesus to fill our hearts with His perfect peace by believing in Him.
