Luke 19:2-6
And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.  And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.  And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.  And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.  And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.

Zacchaeus was just hoping for a glimpse.  He wanted to see Jesus as He passed by.  Perhaps he had heard the stories of miracles and healings and wanted to see what kind of man Jesus was.  Maybe he’d heard of a man teaching with authority and was curious about His doctrine.  Maybe it was nothing more than an interesting sight or a spectacle.  But maybe, too, somewhere in the back of his mind, he wondered if Jesus might have had something for him.  So he climbed that tree and waited to see what Jesus would be like.

But he got so much more than just a passing glimpse, because Jesus stopped right there at the tree where he was watching.  Jesus actually spoke to him and asked to dine at his house.  He could probably hardly believe that Jesus wanted to spend time with him.  He was overjoyed by that simple request.  Jesus responded to his seeking heart, and his whole life was changed.  His outlook was changed.  His heart was changed.  He had gained the greatest treasure he could have.

The truth is, Jesus wants to have a relationship with us.  We don’t have to be mere spectators and watch Him walk on by, but we get to experience fellowship with Him, time in His presence, a changed heart, a new perspective, a different life.  It doesn’t matter who we are or what we do for a living.  It doesn’t matter if we’re big or small, young or old.  It doesn’t matter how people view us or the kinds of things they think about us.  Because Jesus sees us differently.  He knows us differently, and He wants to be our Savior so we can know Him, too.

There is something that can be found in a relationship with Jesus that can’t be found anywhere else.  In Christ, we are totally accepted, fully loved, united with an eternal bond.  Someday we will see Him and know Him fully, as well, but for now, we can still spend time in His presence.  We can joyfully receive Him.  We can get to know Him.  Are we as eager as Zacchaeus for just a glimpse?  Do our hearts burn within us and yearn for time spent with our Savior?
