“The first Noel the angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields where they lay,
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.”

Luke 2:8-10
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.  And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

God does not think lowly of the lowly.  In fact, that is often who He reaches out to the most.  When the angels brought the glorious announcement of Jesus’ birth, they went to shepherds abiding in the field—not a king in a palace, not a mighty man of valor, not someone the rest of the world might consider important.  When He sought parents for His only begotten Son, God chose a humble carpenter and a poor young woman full of faith.

During His ministry, Jesus also sought those whom others might cast aside.  He went to the man in Gadara to free him from those demons.  He went to Samaria to bring living water to the woman at the well.  He made time for lepers and blind men and sick and hurting people everywhere He went.  When He called His disciples, He chose fishermen, a tax collector, and even someone who would betray Him.  And at the same time, He was approachable for Nicodemus the Pharisee and Zacchaeus the publican.  He invited children to come unto Him and made time for those who called out to Him.

The truth is, Jesus came to be the Savior of all mankind.  He seeks the lost no matter where they are or who they are.  We are not unimportant to the God who chose to come to our world and die for our sins.  And the gift that He gives of His Son is available to everyone.  May we have hearts that are open and responsive to the gifts that God offers to us.  And may we understand that though we may be lowly, our big, infinite, eternal God loves us very much, and He proved it with the Gift that He gave to us.
