Daily Battles

1 Samuel 23:14
And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph.  And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.

David had done nothing wrong to deserve death at Saul’s hand.  In fact, he had been doing the right things, living in obedience to God and to Saul as king.  He wasn’t trying to take over the throne, but he was willing to wait on God’s timing.  But Saul was relentless in his pursuit, a king with his army, a powerful force.  He sought David every day and sought him with the intent to kill him.  And yet God saved him and spared him from that every day.

It was a day-by-day, moment-by-moment trust in God that David had.  He was in great danger, but Saul could not touch him because God was with him.  God was greater and more powerful.  We also have an enemy that pursues us every day, and it can feel like we’re running for our lives.  The devil roaring about like a lion seeks our destruction, but we are safe in Christ.  We will be delivered out of his hands day by day.  God gives us continual protection from the enemy who seeks after us.

Sometimes these kinds of troubles come into our lives through no fault of our own, when we are just trying to do the best we can to live for God.  But maybe especially then our enemy wants to see us destroyed.  But just like David, we don’t have to stop doing the right thing or let those things change our relationship with God.  In a way, they can draw us nearer to Him as we experience His mercy and grace when we are facing hardships.

It truly is a daily battle, but the good thing is we only have to face one day at a time.  That really is sufficient.  And with each new day come fresh blessings and mercy from our Lord.  Each day we equip ourselves with the full armor of God and we go out and live for Him.  Day after day we are faithful and continue on following His path.  We find our rest in Christ when we’re weary from the chase.  And eventually we’ll come to a point where we are free from our enemy forever.
