John 4:16-18
Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.  The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.

Was it a shameful thing for this woman to have had five husbands?  It certainly wasn’t something she was willing to admit to this stranger in her town.  Was she continually rejected and just seeking to be loved and wanted?  Had she resigned herself to something less than she hoped her life could have been?  When Jesus finds her, she is in a place where her relationships and her religion had left her completely unsatisfied, longing for more, needing something else.

We all have things with which we try to fill our lives and quench that thirst that burns inside of us.  Perhaps it is relationships that we seek to fill that void.  Perhaps we engage in religious ritual to try to find some meaning.  Perhaps we keep going every day to the same well trying to draw up something that can make us feel whole and complete, but in reality, we’re just barely getting by.  It only temporarily sustains us and doesn’t make a lasting difference.

But what Jesus offers to us can make such a difference.  What He offers can fill in every empty place within our hearts, because He will fill them with Himself.  He comes to us to tell us the truth, to point out the obvious, even if it is not something we are willing to admit—that what we are doing is not working.  So He comes to show us a better way, His way.  He comes to give us His Spirit.  He comes to be our companion and our comforter.  He comes to be Lord and Savior of our lives.  He comes to offer us something everlasting.

Sometimes we just need to take an honest look at our lives and ask ourselves what we’re doing and why we’re doing it.  If it’s something that’s not quite God’s will or God’s best for us, maybe we’re trying to fulfill some need with something other than Jesus.  If we come to another day just feeling so empty and like something is missing, maybe it’s time to start seeking after Jesus.  If everything we’ve found so far leaves us without the meaning that we seek, maybe it’s time to go to Jesus and see if He can help us find exactly what we need.
