Ezra 7:10
For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.
We can also follow the pattern of Ezra in our lives. It begins with preparing our hearts to seek the law of the Lord. It’s about first committing to studying His Word, to listening to the preaching of the Word, and seeking God’s face and His guidance in prayer and meditation. It’s about turning our eyes, our minds, our hearts, and our desires away from the world and towards Almighty God. It is urgently, consciously, diligently, and willfully seeking after the truths of God to gain knowledge and wisdom of godly things and how to conduct ourselves righteously in this world.
And after we set our minds and our hearts on these things, we must commit to follow through in obedience. Once we know what God expects of us in general as Christians and specifically in our individual lives, we have to actually go out and do it to the best of our ability and with our whole heart behind it. We can’t leave work undone that God has asked of us. And may we not allow an area of disobedience to fester in our hearts and spread its corruption into our lives. We must forsake the sins we’ve been clinging to and do what God wants us to do.
Finally, we can teach others about the things of God. We may not all be pastors or Sunday school teachers, but we all have people we can talk to about God. We can raise our children in a home that reads the Bible and talks about what it says. We can tell family and friends, co-workers and strangers about the truths of God. We can share our experiences, our personal testimonies and victories in various ways to let other people know how God can work in a life.
The foundation that Ezra had built up in his own life was strong enough to carry him through all the tasks and trials he would face. He became a leader and an influential voice among the people of Israel. He accomplished much for God because he had determined early on to know God’s ways and follow them. And he taught others the statutes of God, encouraging them and helping them in their relationship with the Lord so they understood what He wanted for them. So let’s determine in our own lives to know God’s law, to do it and follow it each day, and to tell others the amazing truths God has revealed to us.
