John 6:9
There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?

Isn’t that so often our question, too?  There’s never enough, or at least it always seems that way.  There’s not enough time, not enough money, not enough resources.  Or we don’t have enough talent or ability.  There’s just not enough, because the problem is big.  The needs are many.  There’s a multitude to feed.  And if we just throw our little bit at the problem, we won’t even make a dent.  We have something, but it won’t solve the problem.  People are hungry, and we have food, but what we can offer won’t satisfy them all.

But that was the problem.  Jesus wasn’t asking the disciples to feed the multitude themselves.  Jesus wasn’t asking them to supply enough bread in the wilderness.  Jesus didn’t expect them to be able to produce enough food or to meet the need on their own.  He wasn’t asking them to perform a miracle, but to trust Him to do so.  He didn’t expect them to give more than they had, but to trust Him to supply.

Jesus isn’t asking us to figure out the logistics of every hard situation or to do on our own what we never could do.  He never expects that of us.  We are to obey and do our part.  We are to give what we have to the cause.  But the main thing we are to do is to trust in Jesus.  The main thing is to depend on Him, to look to Him to supply, to understand nothing is impossible with God, and we don’t have to do it alone or figure everything out.

Apart from God, all of our great needs will be met with something insufficient.  What are our good works among so many sinful ones?  What is our strength against the powerful forces around us.  What is our little bit compared to the great need?  But when God steps in, He brings with Him an overwhelming abundance that we could never fathom.  He has grace greater than all of our sins.  He has more power than anything that could come against us.  And He is all-sufficient in and of Himself to meet every need of every creature.  So may we just be willing to look to Jesus and trust Him to be enough.
