True Stories

Luke 24:11
And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.

Sometimes we can get too smart for our own good.  The events recorded in the Bible can be hard to believe, because God did so many amazing and seemingly impossible things.  But just because we can’t wrap our minds around it doesn’t mean that it’s not true.  God’s ways are not our ways.  God’s ability goes far beyond what we can even imagine.  Who God is and what He is capable of can just blow our minds because we are incapable of grasping all that an infinite God is.  And so many people are just willing to dismiss it all completely because it seems to them like it can’t be true.

Another group of people had a hard time believing in the amazing works of God.  Another group doubted and scoffed and refused to accept the truth because they didn’t think it could be so.  But this group just happened to be Jesus’ closest followers, His disciples, those who knew Him best and heard Him preach.  In fact, these were the very people Jesus told about His death and resurrection.  But when they hear the reports that Jesus is alive, instead of rejoicing, they think it’s too good to be true.

So, how do we view the stories that are told in Scripture, the truth God gives us in His Word?  Does it seem like something that can’t be true?  Do they seem like nice stories that aren’t relevant to us?  Are those things too hard for us to believe?  But we can’t trust so much in what we think.  That gets us into trouble in a lot of different ways.  And if everything has to make sense to our reasoning and our logic and our understanding, then we are going to miss everything that God is doing.

But the amazing thing about faith is that it means we can let go of having to figure everything out on our own.  It means we can let go of the pressure of having to have all the answers.  It can take away fear that comes from not being able to see for ourselves what comes next.  We can simply rely on God to have those things figured out, to do things that seem impossible, to be faithful to all of His promises.  May we let go of any tendencies we have to trust too much in what we think and be willing to humbly believe all that God says.  Let’s not view the Bible as a book of fairy tales, but the solid and unchangeable truth of our holy God.
