Revelation 6:15-17
And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?
Man, in his pride, likes to think he can stand in his own power. He likes to think that he is invincible and capable and can rise up to greatness if he only works hard enough or has enough aptitude and opportunities to really get somewhere. He thinks all it takes is ambition and a strong desire to accomplish whatever he sets his mind to. But isn’t it funny how men will take all the credit when they make it to the top but accept none of the blame when they are cast down to the very bottom?
But one day, mankind will get to a point where there is no one left to blame and there is no one left to save him. When God decides it’s time, when that day comes and His wrath is poured out in its fullest, no man can stand against that. No man will have an excuse for his refusal to believe God. No man will be able to hide. No man will be able to exert his own will against God’s righteous judgment. And the rich and the poor and the rulers and the servants find themselves united in their inability to do anything at all to help themselves. It will be a very clear demonstration of the utter helplessness of man.
There is no escaping our fate—what God has determined will come to pass. Those who reject Christ will have nothing to stand on and no way to hide. There is nothing that can protect them because they are outside of Christ. They are not safe in Him. They have not received the atonement that He offered and so are counted the enemies of God. They are on the wrong side of the battle. They are getting what they earned by those self-serving choices.
But right now, there is still time. Jesus died for all mankind. He died for kings and rich men and rulers and powerful people, as well as the poor and the servants and the regular joes. We all have an opportunity right now to choose Jesus and avoid the wrath of God. And if we accept Him, we’ll be safe. We won’t need to hide, because His wrath won’t be directed at us. We won’t need to be afraid because we are sheltered in Him. We won’t need to wish for an escape because we will already be dwelling in safety.
