Choosing What Is Right

Psalm 101:2-3
I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way.  O when wilt thou come unto me?  I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.  I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

We can’t control very much that happens outside our lives or outside our homes.  When we’re out and about just living our lives, going to work, the store, school, or wherever, we’re going to hear things we don’t want to hear.  People are going to use words we would never use and say things we wouldn’t.  Music will be playing that we wouldn’t choose to listen to.  And we’ll see things we don’t want to see.  Living life in a fallen world will expose us to a lot of things we would not choose to bring into our worlds.

But we can control how we act and what we do and what we say.  Within our homes, we control what we hear and what we listen to and the kinds of things we see.  So let us be diligent in those things we can have an effect on.  Let’s act how we’re supposed to act and do what we’re supposed to do.  Let’s behave as children of God should behave and not be imitators of worldly people who don’t share our convictions or our love for God.  Within our realm, our domain, let us walk with a perfect heart.

We can’t let other people’s evil stick to us.  We don’t have to become like them.  We may see it or hear it or know about it, but we don’t have to participate in it.  We don’t have to choose it for ourselves.  We don’t have to allow it in our lives or immerse ourselves in it.  And though some things are unavoidable, we must seek to keep evil at bay as much as possible.  We don’t have to go very far to find it, and if we’re not careful, it can creep into our lives and start infecting things.

Will we make this commitment to behave in such a way?  Will we live above reproach?  Will we abstain from all appearances of evil?  Will we treat sin and evil with the holy hatred that we should, like the poison it is, and seek to avoid it at all costs?  May we continue to make right choices even as evil seems to abound all around us.  May we actively strive for purity and righteousness in our lives, seeking the things that please God.  And may we consciously decide to follow after those things that are good.
