Isaiah 40:28-31
Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary?  there is no searching of his understanding.  He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.  Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

So often we try to define things, categorize things, compare things to gain understanding of them.  We take complicated things and try to break them down into pieces that we can try to grasp.  But God is so beyond that.  He doesn’t fit into our world, but He exists outside of it.  We can’t define Him by our terms because He is so much more than we can ever really know.  If we spent every moment of our whole lives searching, we would never get close to truly understanding all that He is.

What a comfort that should be, though, that God is greater than we can imagine, that He is so much more than we can make sense of.  When we are children, we find a certain comfort in the knowledge that our parents know more than we do and are more able than we are because we understand to some degree our lack and our need for something more than we are.  It works the same way with God, except on a much grander scale.  Our God is limitless and infinite.  He is everlasting.  He always was, and He’s never going to go away.  He never gets tired and is not prone to the same weaknesses that we have and experience so tangibly every day.

At our best, when we’re young and strong and in our prime, we get so tired and weary and worn.  At our best, we will eventually run out of energy and strength.  At our best we have so many limitations that are just part of being created.  But there is a place to find what we lack.  When we look to our great God, this God so high above us, He gives to us from His infinite store.  It is when we get to those places of complete emptiness, when we have no might, that He intervenes with His strength.  And when it is God we are depending on, we have a strength that doesn’t wane.  We won’t grow weary and we won’t faint when it is God who is supplying.

That unfainting and unwearying strength of God can be injected into our lives, so may we look ever and only to Him for it.  It is something He will willingly give to us if we ask Him for it and are depending on Him alone to supply it.  And as we continue moving forward by His strength, we can do much for His honor and glory.  There truly is no comparison between God and what He is able to do and man and what he is able to do.  So let us submit to Him and then rise up as He enables us to.
