But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction.
Sometimes it seems like we don’t want to hear from God, that we don’t want Him to instruct us in the ways we should go because we want to go our own way and do what we want to do. We walk around with a very calloused attitude, not caring what God wants or that we are directly defying Him. We tell ourselves that He is merciful and will not punish us or that He is not paying any attention to what we are doing or that we should be allowed to do whatever we want. But these lies we tell ourselves only lead us further astray and may bring God’s judgment upon us.
Are we willing to hear from God? Are we willing to hear from Him if He is saying something we don’t want to hear? Sometimes as His Spirit is prodding, we can feel ourselves tense and the muscles in our neck start to tighten, and we close our eyes and we cover our ears and we try to push Him away because we know what’s coming is hard or uncomfortable or painful. And when we dig our heels in and push back against God, He’ll only push so far before He gives us over to our own stubbornness. And suddenly the silence is deafening and His presence is far from us and our light is fading.
It is a conscious decision that we have to make not to resist and turn away and insist on our own way. We must decide to be pliable in God’s hands and bend to His will. We must purposefully turn our ears toward Him and heed His instructions to us. We must submit all to Him, because left on our own, we falter and fail every time. We must surrender to the truth that God really does want what is best for us and that we must follow His way if we want to experience that in our lives. We must open ourselves up to Him and His teachings and allow Him to work in our hearts.
If we’ve been resisting God, now is the time to repent of that and turn back to Him with a surrendered heart. There is mercy there waiting for us. Let’s talk with God about those hard sayings we don’t want to listen to and ask for His help in dealing with things we may not understand. He’s willing to work with us and help us to get back on the right track. He wants open and honest communication. He wants a humble and submissive spirit. He wants our obedience because it shows Him that we trust Him and wish to honor Him. If we want those same things, let’s go to God right now and renew our commitment to Him.
