Matthew 18:11-13
For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost. How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray? And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray.

My friend, if you think that God couldn’t possibly care at all about you, please think again. Notice that it is the Shepherd Himself who leaves the 99 to seek the one who has gone astray. And He goes wherever is necessary to find that lost one and carry it back home where it belongs. And our good Shepherd does not only seek the lost who need a shepherd, but also those who are already His own who maybe wander off the path, go too far in the wrong direction, or get turned around and need some help coming back to where they were before. He seeks us in our lostness, whatever that may be.

When Adam and Eve sinned and they were hiding in the garden naked and ashamed, God didn’t say to them, “Well, you messed up. Now you’ve got to fix it.” It was He who provided the covering and the covenant. When we mess up in our sinfulness, He doesn’t leave it up to us to figure it out or to work our way back or to try to make up for what we’ve done in sinning against Him. But He took it all upon Himself. The whole plan of salvation is completely dependent on God, and zero percent of it depends on anything that we can do.

This is our God—the seeking Shepherd who climbs the mountain and crosses the desert for that one lost wandering soul. The gracious Savior who saw mankind sin from His home on high and said, “I’ll go down and make a way.” The Lamb of God who gave His life on that cross so those lost ones didn’t have to be lost anymore. He takes it upon Himself to seek out each one. It matters that much to Him. We matter that much to Him, and it brings Him great joy to find us and restore us unto Himself.
