Getting the Message

Revelation 3:22
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

This is the refrain of Jesus’ letters to the churches.  The Spirit is speaking, and we do well to listen to Him.  Sometimes we may think, “How do I know what God wants me to do?  How can I find God’s will?  How do I hear His voice?”  But here it is written for us.  The Spirit is speaking to these seven churches at a point in time, but we have it recorded in Scripture here.  He is speaking to whoever has an ear, whoever is willing to listen.  His Word is given so that we may know and so that we may do something with that knowledge.

We can glean so many lessons from what Jesus has said here.  But may we listen with an intent to act upon what He says to us specifically as He speaks to our hearts through His Word.  May we repent when repentance is necessary.  May we understand what displeases God and refrain from doing those things.  May we start to do, or continue to do, those things He tells us that He wants us to do.

God cannot be silenced.  He promises that His Word is eternal.  That’s why we can read these words today that He spoke to the churches all those years ago and apply those same things to our lives.  God is continually speaking to us, and we can either ignore Him and go on as we are or we can listen, really hear Him, and change our lives through His leading.  Through the Word of God, every generation can know about God and what He expects of us.

What is our response when the Spirit of God reveals something to us through His Word?  Do we take it to heart?  Do we refuse to hear?  Do we make changes?  May we approach Scripture with an open mind, open eyes, open ears, and an open heart.  May we let His Spirit have His way.  And may we be willing to respond to those messages as He reveals them to us.  We do well to take seriously the messages that God has intentionally given to us.
