Mark 5:35-36
While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further? As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.
Jairus had had enough faith initially to go to Jesus and ask Him to come and heal his daughter of her sickness so she wouldn’t die. He had believed that Jesus could do such a thing. But would he believe that Jesus could still heal his daughter if healing now meant bringing her back to life? Would there be a limit on what he believed Jesus could do, or would he have faith that Jesus could do this harder thing that may have seemed impossible? The messengers from his house lacked this faith. They viewed the situation to have moved beyond Jesus’ ability to help and intervene. But Jesus would go with Jairus back to his house and do what only He could do. He would do something beyond what people thought possible and raise Jairus’ daughter back to life.
Do we ever place limitations on Jesus and what He can do? Do we deem some situation beyond the reach of His power? Some person beyond the reach of His help? Do we ever think that something is too hard for Him or that it’s too late for Him to act? Or are we willing to have complete faith and trust that Jesus can do anything, even something that seems impossible? Are we willing to believe that His power goes beyond what we can think or imagine? May we be willing, like Jairus was, to surrender our fear, let go of our doubts, and only believe in Jesus and all that He can do.
Amen!
