Matthew 1:18-21
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Joseph found himself in a bit of a predicament. The woman he was supposed to marry was found with child, only apparently he didn’t know yet that it was of the Holy Ghost and from God. So he was thinking about the situation, trying to figure out what to do, and he had made a plan to deal with it in a private, noble way that would spare both him and Mary as much shame as possible. But while he was thinking through all of this, God came to him. God knew Joseph’s thoughts. He knew the situation in detail. He knew what was bothering Joseph and what he was planning to do. So God steps in to offer an answer to Joseph, to reassure him, and to enable him to make the right choice in a challenging situation.

We may not be pondering things of the same gravity as what Joseph faced here, but God knows our thoughts. He knows what is on our minds, what we’re wrestling with in our hearts, the choices we have to make, the paths we are considering. He knows what the best course of action is, and He can guide us to the right decision as we are willing to trust and obey. It may not be through an angel in a dream, but He has given us His Word, and He invites us to come to Him and lay our burdens at His feet. He promises wisdom to those who ask for it. He will help us as we pray and seek. We can trust that God knows every thought and worry and that He has the answer that we need.
