The Straight and Narrow

Matthew 7:13-14
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

There are many ways to destroy our lives. There are many paths that lead to death and destruction and separation from God. There are many ways we can go that will lead us opposite of the way that God wants us to live. It is easy to find the path to ruin. We barely have to even look for it at all, but it gapes wide in front of us, ready to consume us and everything good that could come in our lives.

But there is only one path to life. There is this narrow way, this small opening that will set us on this path, this one door that opens the way to the pasture of abundant life and the full blessings of God. Only Christ can save us. Only in Him can eternal life be found. Only one path leads to God, and we can’t get there without His Son. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, and without Him there is no salvation, no hope, no relationship with God.

Today it seems that most want to turn this around and say there are many paths to God and that there are multiple options to get to heaven or to have eternal life, whatever it is that may suit them, regardless of what God has to say about it. But these are the false prophets that Jesus mentions in the very next verses of this chapter. Preaching any other way but Christ only leads to destruction and death. We must follow God’s way if we want to end up dwelling with Him where He is.

Many will seek that broad way. It is easier, after all. It requires little of us. There is no real risk to taking that path. But will you be one of the few who seeks Christ and Christ alone, who trusts in Him for salvation, who believes His Word, and who commits to this narrow way of following and obeying Jesus Christ? You’ll be going against the crowd if you do. You may be ridiculed or even attacked. But you’ll only find true life if you’re willing to go through Jesus Himself to get there.
