1 Samuel 22:2
And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.

These men who gathered to David had nothing to lose, really.  Their circumstances or maybe their choices had gotten them to these places of distress, debt and discontentment.  And here was a chance for a fresh start.  Here was a chance to be part of something bigger than themselves.  Here was a chance to find some kind of purpose and fulfillment and to give their lives to something more than perhaps they had up to this point.

Maybe we can relate to these men.  Maybe things haven’t gone the way we planned and we’ve ended up distressed or in debt or discontent with our lives.  If so, may we not keep sinking deeper into those things, but look for opportunities to do something different, to find something worth being part of, to find a purpose in our lives that goes beyond whatever has gotten us to this point.

In this case, David was on the run from Saul, and it wasn’t going to be easy to be part of his band.  But he was still the future king of Israel.  He was someone worth following and someone worth serving.  It was going to be worth it to be involved in David’s life and what would eventually come.  We, too, have an opportunity to serve a King and to get on board with what He is doing.  It may not always be easy.  It may involve some trials and challenges, but at the end, we’ll stand in Christ’s kingdom with Him and enjoy all that He has for us.  Let’s choose to be part of it.  So maybe we’re distressed or we have debt or we’re discontent.  That is part of life.  But let’s move beyond that and join the worthy cause of following Christ and serving Him with our lives.
