For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
That’s our problem sometimes, isn’t it? We do like to boast. We like to do things and accomplish goals and tell people all about the great things we have done. But what we should be talking about are the great things God has done. He’s a jealous God who desires to be glorified and who deserves to be glorified. And what speaks of His greatness more than Christ’s death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead?
The truth is, after Adam and Eve sinned, mankind found itself with an unsolvable problem. There was something wrong, but he couldn’t fix it himself. There was something to be accomplished, but he couldn’t do anything about it. There was a task to complete and a goal to achieve, but he could never contribute what was necessary. That didn’t stop him from trying. That didn’t keep him from working and striving and trying to do something to make it right.
But God Himself left heaven. God put on flesh. God was born into this world, into His own creation. God was a baby in a manger, a boy in the temple, a man in a carpenter’s shop. He lived a sinless life. He fulfilled all the prophecies. He walked up the hill and gave His life on a cross. He went to the grave and He rose again. And suddenly that lingering, impossible problem had a solution, and no one but God could take any of the credit.
Our salvation is a gift—and a very precious gift. All the work that was required was done by God. And the result is, yes, our salvation, our freedom, our forgiveness. But the result is also all glory to God in the highest, much praise to His great name, the most supreme reason for Him and Him alone to be glorified forever and ever. We have nothing to boast about for ourselves, but may we glory in the Lord. May we boast of His great love and His great sacrifice and His great gift. May we truly understand what was accomplished and how and what that means for us. Because it created a life in us that we are to use for His honor and glory.
