Mark 16:13-14
And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.  Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

The disciples sat sorrowful and unbelieving in the upper room.  They had seen the empty tomb, but they could come up with some reasonable explanations for that.  Several reported seeing Jesus, but they were able to dismiss those accounts.  Surely they thought they were mistaken.  It all seemed too good to be true.  But Jesus had told them beforehand what would happen.  Scripture had revealed the plan.  And only when they see Jesus do they realize they should have believed all along.

We don’t have to wait until we see Jesus face-to-face to believe all the things we can believe right now.  The evidence is there.  The witnesses have told what they saw.  The Word of God has been given.  The stories are told and the promises are recorded, but do we really believe it all?  Even when it seems so impossible to believe, are we willing to just have faith that God is true and He is true to His Word?

The testimonies given are sure and true, confirmed by God’s Spirit of truth within us.  So we don’t have to live in doubt and fear and sorrow.  We don’t have to live as if Jesus isn’t alive.  We don’t have to continue on as if all He has told us isn’t true.  But we can believe in every single promise.  We can trust all He has said.  So may we experience all that simply trusting God’s Word can bring to our lives and our hearts.  Surely peace and joy and hope and strength come from believing what God has said.

Not only do we miss out when we live as if those things aren’t true, but our unbelief displeases Jesus.  All along He had been telling the disciples all that they needed to know.  And the most basic thing required of them was just to believe Him.  There is no one more trustworthy than Jesus.  There is none other worth putting our complete trust and faith in.  It is worth taking that chance and building our lives completely on what God has said.  May we live lives of faith in which we are simply willing to believe God.
