Full Understanding

Psalm 147:5
Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.

Our understanding will always be limited.  No matter the amount of knowledge the human race is able to accumulate, it will never encompass all there is to know.  We, as limited and finite creatures, can never attain to perfect and complete understanding of the world.  We will never be able to fully grasp all the whats, whys, and hows of this life.  But that’s okay, because God knows.  His unlimited understanding drives this world and the events of our lives, and we can trust in that without having to know everything for ourselves.

There are so many things about God that are beyond our knowing.  We could never reach out to the edges of all that God is because He has no edges.  He is infinite.  What He does, what He knows, and who He is are just so great and above all.  And if God is infinite, then everything about Him is infinite—His understanding and wisdom, His power, His grace, His righteousness, His love.  It is all endless and eternal like He is.

God knows everything there is to know.  Nothing confounds Him.  Nothing is beyond His knowledge and wisdom.  So He understands us in a world where we can feel so misunderstood.  He understands our feelings and fears, our desires and dreams.  He understands our hearts and our thoughts.  He understands our brokenness and our need for Him.  He understands everything about our lives and where we’re going and how we’re going to get there.  He can know us in a way that no one else can.

May we be willing, then, to trust God with all of those things that confound us.  We don’t have to have all the answers as long as we are trusting God to have the answer.  We don’t have to know and understand everything when we know that He does.  Though God is infinite and we are not, He has enabled us to have a degree of understanding about who He is.  He has made Himself known to us.  And so may those things we can understand about Him be enough to cause us to trust Him completely.
